Recent studies paint a complex picture. While overall unemployment rates haven't skyrocketed, a closer look reveals a concerning trend. Young workers, aged 20-24, in occupations heavily exposed to AI automation are experiencing a noticeable decline in employment. A Stanford University study found a 13% drop in employment for this group since 2022, while jobs less susceptible to AI automation remain stable or even grow.
But here's where it gets controversial: This decline isn't primarily due to layoffs. Instead, it seems fewer young people are entering these AI-exposed fields in the first place. This suggests a shift in career choices, potentially driven by fears of automation or a lack of relevant skills.
Researchers analyzed data from the U.S. Census Bureau's Current Population Survey, tracking employment trends across different age groups and AI exposure levels. They categorized occupations based on their susceptibility to AI automation, ranging from low-exposure jobs like cashiers and janitors to high-exposure roles like customer service representatives and administrative assistants.
And this is the part most people miss: The impact, while real, is currently small. The decline in young worker employment in AI-exposed jobs only accounts for a 0.1 percentage point increase in overall unemployment. However, this could be an early warning sign. As AI technology advances, its impact on the job market could become more pronounced.
