The Cardinals have been fielding a flood of trade inquiries about left-hander JoJo Romero, and the Yankees are among the teams showing interest, per Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The Mariners were publicly linked to Romero previously, though it’s unclear if Seattle remains engaged now that Jose A. Ferrer has moved to the Nationals and joined the Mariners’ bullpen discussions.
Romero is projected to earn about $4.4 million in 2026, his final arbitration year before free agency. With St. Louis in a rebuild phase, packaging Romero now makes practical sense: it could yield a higher return than waiting until the trade deadline while reducing the risk of losing him to injury mid-season.
From New York’s vantage point, the Yankees have faced a reshuffling of their bullpen, with Devin Williams and Mark Leiter Jr. entering free agency and Luke Weaver still on the open market. The club has added left-handed depth by re-signing Ryan Yarbrough, who serves more as a swingman than a pure reliever. Veteran Tim Hill is expected to anchor one spot on the left side, and left-handers Brent Headrick and Jayvien Sandridge remain on the 40-man roster, with additional depth elsewhere in the bullpen.
Romero would bring left-handed experience and a proven track record to a Yankees bullpen that could use more stability in high-leverage moments. Since arriving in St. Louis as part of the Edmundo Sosa trade in 2022, Romero has consistently improved. He has posted a 2.93 ERA across 156 2/3 innings dating from Opening Day 2023, with his best season coming in 2025: a 2.07 ERA over 61 innings. That said, his 2025 SIERA of 4.10 hints at a strikeout deficiency and an elevated walk rate (11.4%), his highest over three seasons with the Cardinals, echoing some of the control struggles he showed earlier with the Phillies.
Romero’s game plan centers on grounders and soft contact. He’s recorded a 53.7% ground-ball rate across his MLB tenure and posted a career-best 35.1% hard-hit ball rate in 2025. He’s also proven adept at keeping the ball in the yard, allowing just two homers in 60 innings last year. While his strikeout rate (22.8% lifetime) isn’t overwhelming, Romero remains a dependable option for leverage scenarios rather than a pure strikeout pitcher.
Some teams may hesitate over the lack of elite strikeouts, but the combination of affordability, track record in high-leverage roles, and the ability to induce weak contact makes Romero an attractive target for multiple contenders. However, a deal isn’t guaranteed. Goold notes that the Cardinals may still seek experienced relief help, and if a favorable match doesn’t materialize, St. Louis could opt to keep Romero and revisit trade conversations closer to or even during the season. A veteran addition elsewhere could also tilt the balance toward holding Romero into the season.
